Moving · Woodbury, Cottage Grove & Hastings

Which school serves this home? Verify East Metro boundaries before you buy.

A mailing city, nearby school, or listing label is not a final enrollment answer. Here is how to check the address and the school year that matter to you.

A city name does not identify the school district

If school assignment is part of your move, verify it before narrowing your home search around an assumption. Woodbury is a useful example: the city name alone does not tell you which district serves an address. District 622 and Stillwater Area Public Schools both identify portions of Woodbury within their boundaries, and SoWashCo provides its own address-based boundary resources.

The school nearest a home is not necessarily the assigned school. A listing field is useful as a starting point, but I would not make a purchase decision depend on that field without checking the district. This also applies when comparing homes across Cottage Grove, Lake Elmo, Oakdale, Afton, or Hastings.

Start with what matters to you: a particular program, transportation arrangement, school calendar, or another concrete need. Those priorities belong to your household. My role is to help you find and verify the information, not rank neighborhoods or decide which school is right for you.

Use the address tool, then confirm the result

Enter the complete address in the relevant district’s boundary resource, including the street direction and suffix. Check elementary, middle, and high school information as applicable. Save the result with the date and the school year you are investigating.

SoWashCo’s enrollment page is explicit that its map is not the final enrollment determination. Its guidance also notes that some newer developments may be missing from the tool. For a new address in a developing part of Cottage Grove or Woodbury, contact Student Information instead of choosing the nearest address that does appear.

For Hastings, use the Minnesota district’s enrollment page and attendance-boundary resources. Ask the enrollment office to confirm the address. Search results can surface other places named Hastings; make sure you are using Hastings Public Schools in Minnesota.

Ask for the year and grade you will actually need

A correct answer for a current student is not automatically a promise for a future school year. Tell the district when you expect to move, the grade involved, and the address under consideration. Ask whether an adopted boundary change or enrollment process affects that combination.

Keep attendance assignment separate from admission to a particular program or an open-enrollment request. If you are relying on an application, transfer, or program placement, confirm the process and status directly. Do not treat a possible option as an approved placement.

A concise email can help: “We are considering [address] for a move in [month/year]. Which district and attendance school would serve grade [grade] for [school year], and what should we verify before relying on that assignment?” Keep the district’s response with your move planning.

Verify transportation and try the real daily route

Ask about bus eligibility, stop information when available, timing, and any application steps separately from school assignment. If before- or after-school care matters, contact the provider about availability. A home address inside a boundary does not answer every logistical question.

Then test the trip you would actually make. Include a school or childcare stop, work, parking, and the return trip. In the East Metro, a route using I-94, I-494, Highway 61, or a river crossing deserves a trial at the time you expect to use it. Do not turn one quiet weekend drive into a guaranteed weekday commute.

MnDOT’s 511 service is useful for current traffic, construction, and road-condition information. Check it before the test drive and use your observations as a planning aid. Conditions can change; the useful output is a routine you understand, not an advertised number of minutes.

Keep verified priorities in the home search

Once the district has answered, put the verified assignment and any remaining enrollment or transportation steps beside the property’s cost, layout, and condition. That makes it easier to compare homes without losing track of an important dependency.

If an answer is still pending, tell me before we shape an offer around it. We can discuss the timing and next step. A focused home search works best when your must-haves are supported by the right source and your choices stay in your hands.
